General Scott Joins the War (January 1847)
|
The war was going very well for the United States, but President Polk heard some opposition to the war. Some people did not want to be in the war anymore. In order to counter that, Polk hired General Winfield Scott (who he did not like) to lead the second front. However, Scott only agreed to do this if he was able to have more men than Taylor, and if he could have Taylor's best officers. Then, Polk hesitantly agreed to that deal. Because of this deal between Polk and Scott, Taylor got very mad. Just to emphasize how big those officers were, here are a few: Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, James Longstreet, George Meade, and Stonewall Jackson. All of those men would later play a very big part in the Civil War.
