The Battle of Buena Vista (February 22, 1847)
First in this battle, a Mexican hero by the name of Santa Anna thought he would surprise Taylor and his troops by hiding along the road into the city (Buena Vista). However, Taylor and some 5,000 troops marched ahead of Santa Anna and took the high ground while demolishing the 15,000 Mexican troops. To make things worse, Santa Anna lost his leg in the battle and fled on his own, letting his own troops to get killed. Because of that, Santa Anna goes into exile in Cuba. Even Mexicans made fun of him saying that he ran so fast away from Taylor that his leg fell off. Finally, after all he has been through, Zachary Taylor resigned after the Battle of Buena Vista, and returned to the United States as a big hero. He will also be elected president in 1848.
